Doubtless Bay Wine Company

Captain Cook sailed past the area we call home in December 1769 and recorded the name in his journal because the sight of distant dunes made him sure it was a bay. Still known as Doubtless Bay, it is an area steeped in the history of Maori as well as European exploration. It is also very much a land apart, a unique environment where warm and dry sunny conditions are moderated by cooling maritime breezes to provide a long growing season for grapes to develop ripe flavours and the attributes to provide structure for our wines.
Doubtless Bay Wine Company is a family-owned company established by Hugh and Vicki Ammundsen. We acquired our small vineyard property at Lake Ohia, near the foot of the Karikari Peninsula, in 1997 and our oldest vines are now 20 years of age.

The Far North is a maritime region. The sea dominates not only the climate but also the lifestyle and food culture. The seas of Doubtless Bay and the surrounding ocean are rich with fish, shellfish and other kai moana. We have selected grape varieties that we believe are suited to our unique climate and lifestyle, and to the foods of the area, bottled as wine under our “Doubtless” and “True North” labels.
